This structure reflects the need to coordinate policy, compliance, operations, and external stakeholders without long bureaucratic chains slowing execution.

What’s notable is how closely major corporations resemble this model. Leaders at JPMorgan Chase, Apple, and Salesforce maintain broad direct-report rosters that cut across product, region, and function. Rather than delegating integration downward, these CEOs centralize alignment at the top, using their span as a control surface for enterprise-wide priorities.

The pattern suggests a redefinition of CEO work. Instead of managing through layers, wide-span CEOs act as chief integrators — resolving tradeoffs, synchronizing leaders, and compressing decision distance. The cost is intensity; the payoff is speed and coherence in complex systems.
