What Is The 5S System?

The 5S system is a lean manufacturing tool that is utilized in organizing space in order to perform work more efficiently, effectively, and safely. It focuses on creating an environment where people can do their jobs more productively and without any harm. The 5S stands for Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (Sustain). It’s a powerful management system that encourages people to think lean and adopt lean principles in the organization.

How to Implement 5S in an Organization with Creately?

  • The 5S methodology is fairly easy to implement. It can be implemented in any type of organization, from manufacturing plants to small offices to multinational organizations in both the public and private sectors.
  • The first step of the 5S system is Sort (Seiri), the aim of which is to sort through the clutter, keep what’s necessary, eliminate what’s unnecessary and clear up space.
  • The next step is to Store (Seiton) and it entails organizing and storing equipment, resources, tools, material, data, etc. for easy retrieval. You can use a technique like labeling here.
  • Then comes Shine (Seiso) where you focus on keeping it tidy and clean. Remove all the trash and dirt, and set standards for cleanliness. Conduct regular inspections to ensure that things are kept in order.
  • In the step standardize (Seiketsu), it’s all about forming habits, which means getting the workforce to carry out steps 1, 2, and 3 systematically on a daily basis. To standardize the system within the organization, introduce guidelines, formal operating procedures, policies, etc.
  • To Sustain (Shituske) the implementation of the 5S methodology within the organization, it is important to incorporate it into the company culture; encourage everyone from the CEO and down to engage in and support the process.
