What Is a Confrontation Matrix?

The confrontation matrix is often used as an extended part of the SWOT analysis. After you have identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of your organization, system, process, etc. using the SWOT analysis matrix, you can rely on the confrontation matrix to further compare these conclusions with each other before you set up the strategy. By doing so, you can clearly identify which important strategic issues the organization is currently facing and discover the sensible strategic choices to act upon.

How to Use the Confrontation Matrix?

  • Based on your requirements, bring together a cross-functional team that can help carry out a critical examination of the facts at hand. By simply sharing your Creately confrontation matrix document with them, you can give them access to edit it in real-time.
  • In order to create your confrontation matrix, you need to have completed your SWOT analysis and prioritized the information first.
  • With the conclusions of the SWOT analysis, write down the Opportunities and Threats on the horizontal axis and the Strengths and Weaknesses on the vertical axis.
  • Then comes entering values; you can give 3 scores (1,2, and 3 points making it 6 points in total), for each external opportunity and threat.
  • For example, take a look at the first opportunity and identify which strength or weakness is most important here and score it 3. You can give the second most important strength or weakness a 2, and the third most important a 1. Similarly, go through all the opportunities and threats and fill in the fields of the matrix.
  • Analyze the results of the matrix; actions must be taken to deal with the strengths and weaknesses that you have scored the highest first.
  • Invest in strengths and opportunities that have received high points, while taking care to carefully eliminate the threats and weaknesses that got high scores.
