What Is the ‘How Might We’ Method?

The ‘How Might We’ method is a design thinking technique that enables a team to find innovative solutions to issues or blockers by reframing known challenges that surround a product, service or initiative. Writing ‘How Might We’ notes (or HMWs) is a collaborative exercise by teams at the beginning of a project or strategic initiative.

How to Create a How Might We Template?

    • Identify the problem statement - Research, identify and understand the needs and pain points of your customers and users. For example, users are not aware of the value proposition and full product offering.
    • Breakdown the problem statement - After identifying the problem statement, you can start breaking it down into smaller actionable steps. Brainstorm how the problem can be solved through different components and elements.
    • Map ‘How Might We’ notes as much as possible - Take each of the actionable steps identified and start mapping down “How Might We” notes for it as much as possible. Make your notes as comprehensive as possible by arranging the intended experience with the desired effect for the user. For example, how might we create awareness for the full product offering so that users become loyal to the product?
    • Prioritize on the identified opportunities - Use Creately How Might We template to visually represent the challenges and opportunities identified from the ‘How Might We’ notes. You can then arrange, style and add color themes to prioritize the set of opportunities you and your team will be working on.
