What Is a House of Quality?
The House of Quality (HOQ) is defined as a product planning matrix that is built to show how customer requirements relate directly to the ways and methods companies can use to achieve those requirements. House of Quality diagrams use a design that resembles the outline of a house and can be created using technical and competitive benchmarking data. HOQ is considered the primary tool used during quality function deployment to help facilitate group decision-making.
How to Create a House of Quality Matrix?
- Begin by opening a Creately workspace, selecting a HOQ template and inviting key stakeholders to participate.
- On the left side of the template list down all the customer needs you have gathered based on your research. Then, rate them on a scale of 1-5 based on how important you think they are.
- Now list all the design requirements for the product such as weight, cost of production, materials, etc.
- Now weigh the needs of the customers against design requirements in a relationship matrix.
- Now determine how design requirements help or hinder each other by completing the correlation matrix.
- Finally, add your competitor assessment to see how many competitors currently rank for each of your customers’ needs so you can determine what has been overlooked and how you can gain the advantage of your competition.
