The Hook Model

The Hook Model is a psychological framework that explains how products can create user habits by driving repeated engagement. It consists of four key stages: Trigger, Action, Variable Reward, and Investment. A Trigger (either internal or external) prompts users to take an Action, such as clicking or swiping. The Variable Reward stage delivers unpredictable outcomes, creating a sense of anticipation and keeping users hooked. Finally, the Investment phase encourages users to contribute time, effort, or data, increasing the likelihood of future engagement and habit formation.
