Guide and Best Practices

A corrective action plan is a document that outlines the steps to follow to rectify a faulty task, process, product, service, or an employee’s behavior. The action plan details the problematic situation, potential root causes, and the corrective action step that should be followed and implemented.

How to Write a Corrective Action Plan

  • In order to identify the solution, you must first know what the problem is and its nature. By conducting a root cause analysis, you can easily identify what is causing the problem, why it’s occurred, and whether it’s happened before. You can use the cause and effect analysis or the 5 whys analysis to conduct the root cause analysis.
  • Once you have identified the root cause, it’s time to determine and implement a solution to prevent the problem occuring. Solutions may include re-evaluating a process, strengthening the reviewing process to ensure the problem won’t occur again, or providing the necessary team training to help employees perform better.
  • Identify the individuals who will be responsible for carrying out the corrective actions and to whom and when they should report.
  • The next step is to establish key success measures to determine if the corrective actions are working effectively or not. You can set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) goals to simplify measuring the expected outcomes.
  • Closely monitor the steps being executed to completion. Note down lessons learned for future reference.
