Guide and Best Practices

SCAMPER is a creative thinking and problem-solving method that is used during brainstorming sessions. It helps you come up with ideas for new products by encouraging you to find ways to improve your existing products.

How to generate ideas using the SCAMPER Technique

  • Identify an existing product or idea that you want to improve and take them through the 7 thinking techniques in SCAMPER. There is no sequence or order, you can start with any of the 7 elements.
  • Gather your team and make use of the SCAMPER templates created by Creately. Multiple people can edit the same diagram from anywhere and changes will be visible in real-time.
  • Substitute: see whether you can replace a part of your product, process or service with something else in a way that can make improvements to it. This way you can test which alternative is better.
  • Combine: try combining two or more parts of your product, service etc. and see how you can develop a new solution.
  • Adapt: Apply a solution that worked well for you before to another different problem.
  • Modify: change different aspects of your product or service such as size, shape, color, position and see if it will help you add more value to your existing product.
  • Put to another use: change the purpose of the product or service and use it for something else. You may be able to come up with various purposes.
  • Eliminate: eliminate or remove processes or areas that are making your processes inefficient.
  • Reverse: Change the direction or orientation of the process/ product by doing the complete opposite of what it is intended to do. This will help you see things in a different perspective.
