Guide and Best Practices

Brainstorming is a process where a team gathers to discuss and produce new ideas around a specific area of interest.

How to do brainstorming

  • Gather your team. If everyone isn’t available, get them connected online. Use Creately real-time collaboration feature to get their input on your brainstorming chart.
  • Clearly outline the brainstorming process and guidelines. Keep a flowchart highlighting the steps, so you can easily share it with anyone before the session.
  • Clarify the problem you are trying to solve or the question you are trying to answer to the team. It will help you focus better during the session.
  • Set a logical time limit depending on the problem the team is trying to solve. Remember to state how long the session will last at the beginning.
  • Make use of Creately’s real-time collaboration feature so your team can work together on your brainstorming chart as they update it with their ideas.
  • You can use different colors on your mind map, concept map or fishbone diagram to highlight ideas provided by different team members.
  • You can also use affinity diagrams to group ideas in a logical way and identify themes that may have been developed during the brainstorming session.
  • Once the session is complete, sort through ideas gathered to find the most promising ones. You can use colors or icon indicators to create visual highlights.
  • Prioritize the selected ideas and discuss the next set of steps you need to take to move the ideas along.
