Guide and Best Practices
A work plan is a tool that helps you stay organized during project planning. It contains the project goals, tasks to be performed during the project, to whom they are assigned, and the timeline for task completion. Work plans are extremely useful for individuals and project teams and can be used in both academic and professional fields.
How to write a work plan
- Start by writing a brief description of the project. It should explain what the project is about, what it’s aiming to accomplish, or who it is targeting.
- What are the objectives of your project? You can break these down to long-term or short-terms objectives.
- Make sure your objectives are SMART - Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.
- List down the resources you may need to carry out each of the tasks. In a professional context, these could include a financial budget, machinery, software etc., and in an academic context these could be books, research papers, etc.
- Identify those who should be responsible for completing each of the tasks. And add timelines. You can either use a Gantt chart here to depict the order and duration of tasks or simply put start and end dates.
- Are there any obstacles that may slow you down on your way to achieving your goals? You can also mention these along with the precautions you should take.
- Note down how you will measure your success or identify when you have hit your goals.
