What Is a Story Map?

A story map is a technique that involves using a graphic organizer to help students identify the key elements of a story or novel, which will include the characters, plot, environment, themes, etc. More complex stories can include additional elements for an in-depth approach. Story maps are generally used by teachers to help students improve their comprehension, research, and analyzing skills in the classroom. Different versions of story maps are also used in marketing, sales, and product development to create products or user stories.

How to Create a Story Map?

  • Get started on your story map by discussing the main elements of the story, such as the characters, plot, obstacles, etc. This will help your group understand the concept. You can even create a story map for the beginning, middle, or end of the story.
  • Start creating your story map on Creately once you decide on the elements to focus on, and the model you will be creating.
  • You can import images, link documents or resources that are related to your story for reference as well. Select shapes of your choice from the extensive shape library, and add your text.
  • To save time, you can also select an editable story map template from Creately, customize the color palette and add your information.
  • Once the details are filled in, you can start analyzing the story with your group, and interact through video conferencing and comment threads.
  • Export your story map in PNG, SVG, JPEG, and PDF formats for sharing with group members, or publishing on popular platforms. Invite group members to Creatley’s shared workspace via email or an invite link.
