A Cause and Effect Diagram is a critical tool used within the DMAIC methodology to help management identify root causes and desired outcomes of a process. It provides a pictorial representation of how and why a process is performing and by isolating the core problem and its causes, it enables management to implement effective corrective action. As part of the Define phase, managers use the Cause and Effect diagram to develop a problem statement and define metrics to measure the process. In the Measure phase, the diagram is used to analyze data to determine the root cause. During the Analyze phase, managers compare the causes and effects to analyze and prioritize the causes that need to be addressed. Finally, during the Improve phase, the diagram is used to develop plans for implementing corrective actions to address the root causes.
