    What is a Phylogenetic Tree?

    What is a Phylogenetic Tree?

Phylogenetic tree (also phylogeny or evolutionary tree) is a diagram or tree showing the evolutionary relationships among various biological species or entities based upon similarities and differences in their physical or genetic characteristics.

How to Collaborate Around a Phylogenetic Tree in Creately?

    • Share the workspace: Share the workspace with your team, students and colleagues. Invite them to edit the workspace via email or a link invite.

    • Brainstorm and discuss: Discuss the structure and content of the phylogenetic tree with the team. Hold dynamic discussions through Creately’s Microsoft Teams integration.

    • Collaborate to build the tree: Divide tasks among team members via the task panel and track progress. Use smart notifications to stay on top of changes and updates.

    • Use full version history: Use full version history to manage changes made by each member and to revert back if needed.

    • Visualize the tree: Visualize the tree in different perspectives to highlight features such as geographic distribution, ecological traits, or genetic traits. Include additional information to each element via the notes and data panels. Attach docs, links, references, images and more.

    • Publish or share: Download as a PDF, PNG, SVG or JPEG or get an embed link via the embed panel accessible through ‘share’. To share the workspace, simply add the team members' emails and invite them to collaborate.

How to Make a Phylogenetic Tree with Your Team?

    1. Define the scope and research question

As the first step, discuss with the team on what questions the phylogenetic tree intends to answer. Also, agree and define what organisms or groups of organisms will be represented in the tree.

Start by inviting all team members to a shared workspace where you can collaborate. Use Creately’s whiteboard and free hand drawing capabilities to brainstorm, discuss, sketch and divide the work among team members. Assign access levels to team members as viewers, editors and reviewers as well.

    1. Gather data

Collect and organize data on the organisms and their relationships. The gathered data should include, but not limited to, DNA or protein sequences and morphological characters.

Use the customisable table function and notes panel to organize and add more information.

    1. Align sequences

Align the two DNA sequences that you’re going to compare. Ensure that you’re comparing two genes (or other sequences). The strategy is to find the alignment with the most matches and the fewest mismatches.

Bring all information to the shared Creately workspace to compare and group them together with your team.

    1. Build the tree

Use a premade template or draw from scratch, to build the phylogenetic tree. Label with appropriate taxonomic names and relevant information. Creately helps to easily connect and visualize the branches with intelligent connectivity features. Calculate the differences between each pair of sequences once the tree is completed.

Import or drag-and-drop images to create informative phylogenetic trees with ease. If your team does not have images at hand, you can always use the built-in Google search to locate available images to include in the tree.

    1. Evaluate and refine the tree

Once the assigned team members have finished creating the tree, get together with the entire  team to evaluate. Compare the newly created tree to other existing ones and refine by incorporating additional data or adjusting the parameters and models.

    1. Share and review

Request team members and peers to review and provide their feedback. Invite them to the workspace to leave comments using Creately’s in-line comments option or @mentions to highlight any missing information.

You can export the phylogenetic tree in JPEG, SVG, PNG, or PDF formats or share with colleagues for real-time feedback collection.

    1. Cite and acknowledge

As the final touch, properly cite any data or work that was used when creating the tree. Make sure to acknowledge the contributions of each team member.

FAQs About the Phylogenetic Tree Maker in Creately

Why do you need a phylogenetic tree?
Phylogenetics is important in enhancing our understanding of how species, genes, or organisms evolve. A phylogenetic tree helps to communicate and visualize this evolution. It helps to organize knowledge related to biodiversity and structure classifications better to understand the evolution of a species or organism.
Is Creately’s phylogenetic tree maker free?
You can start with Creately’s basic plan to create your phylogenetic tree for free. With access to 3 canvases, you can begin your visualizing journey. Check out https://creately.com/plans/ for more information.
Does Creately have icons or symbols I can use for my phylogenetic tree?
Yes, Creately has an extensive shapes library complete with icons and symbols that you can use. Click on the ‘plus’ sign at the bottom left-hand corner of the canvas to open the shapes library and then navigate to icons to select what you need. If you cannot find what you need in the icons library, navigate to assets and use the built-in Google search function to import icons and symbols from Google.
How can I import images to the canvas?
To import images to the canvas, go to the assets tab of the shapes library. There you can either use the Google search function or import an image from your computer.
