    What Is a Team Charter?

A team charter explains how a team plans to get its work done. It focuses on why the team exists, the objectives the team is designed to accomplish, and how it is going to achieve them. The purpose of the team charter is to get everyone on the same page and keep them focused.

How to Create a Team Charter?

    • Invite all team members involved to create the team charter. Their participation and their thoughts about what your mission is and how you are trying to accomplish it is important to creating an effective team charter.
    • Use Creately’s team charter template to record the data you gather from the brainstorming session. Everyone including remote employees who can make edits with real-time collaboration.
    • Assigning a team leader should be done early on along with determining who will be second in command. If it’s a bigger team, there could be leaders for different subject areas.
    • Start with defining the background of the team. Why is the team formed? What problem are they expected to solve? How does that issue affect the organization? What do stakeholders expect from them? What is expected from each team member?
    • Set the mission and objectives for the team. The mission should highlight what the team is setting out to achieve while the objectives should adhere to the SMART criteria.
    • According to the objectives that you have identified, set the budget and allocate resources which include people as well as equipment and materials.
    • The next step is defining roles and assigning responsibilities. Here you will determine whether you’ll need additional expertise or whether training is needed for the team members. Create a RACI matrix to determine who should be responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed.
    • In the team operations section, clarify how the work gets done and define best practices. To make it easier for the team you can document recurring activities such as how meetings should be conducted, decision-making, conflict resolution processes, etc.
    • In the team member assessment element of the team charter, you need to detail how success will look like and how employee performance will be evaluated.
