What Is a KWL Chart?

The KWL chart is a graphic organizer that helps students organize the information about a lesson to better understand the concept. A KWL diagram consists of 3 columns and the name KWL is derived from the letters of the names of these three columns; What I know, What I want to know, What I learned. Although they have a very basic structure they are a great way to evaluate how your students understood what you taught in the classroom.

How to Create a KWL Chart?

  1. Creately’s KWL chart maker offers a range of intuitive features to quickly create and use KWL charts online.
  2. To start drag and drop the table shape onto your Creately workspace and name the columns. You can quickly apply preferred colors using the contextual toolbar to differentiate between the columns. Or select a ready-made KWL chart template from the library to start right away.
  3. Under the first column “What I Know”, list down the information that you already know about the lesson or topic.
  4. During a group activity where a group of students work together to fill out the KWL chart, you can use Creately’s real-time collaboration capabilities such as live mouse tracking, synced previews and even video conferencing to connect with remote students to smoothen out the process.
  5. Under the second column “What I want to know”, jot down the information that you want to know during the lesson. Questions such as what, when, who, when, where, and how can spark ideas.
  6. The third column is to list down all the information that you learned during the lesson. These could be the answers to the questions in the second column and additional new information about the topic.
  7. Add images, illustrations, and graphics to the KWL chart using built-in Google image search or by importing them from your device.
  8. Attach additional information, including links to resources, essays, websites, articles, documents, etc. with in-app previews to provide more context to your KWL chart.
  9. Export your KWL chart as a PNG, SVG, JPEG, or a PDF to, share, print or share it or use a secure link to embed it in any website you want.
