I agree with your point that your competitors can actually help your business. They are indeed our teachers, both of what to do and not do to build our startups. More than once I have seen a competitor fail at a marketing campaign and learned a ton. My competitors help me to be a better business owner because they keep me on my toes. Appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts on this subject.

One of the best pieces of advice I have for finding out what your customers like or don't like about the competition is to talk to them.

A 30-45 minute phone call or Skype session with a potential customer can teach you so much about what they like or don't like. And moist importantly, what they will pay for.

But you'd be surprised how many people don't do this! I know it sounds scary, especially because they might tell you that your big idea is no good. But if you ask the right questions, people will literally tell you what to sell them.

Copying is not always good. It leads you to trouble especially when you are in a business and you try to copy your competitors. But there is really nothing wrong if you'll just learn from them instead of imitating them. You can be as successful as them if you'll be more aware of what they've been doing or have done, and use this knowledge to be more innovative and unique in your own ways. Yes, be successful in your own ways!

Most entrepreneurs actually fall into the 2nd and third category. The first category is rare but very profitable. The 2nd is easier if you can replicate what your competitors are doing and can do better if you go extra mile. I fall into the 2nd category. Thanks Nishadha for this amazing piece.
